The night the forest
keeps time

For about two weeks each year, thousands of Photinus carolinus flash in unison in one valley of the Smokies. Scroll to watch chaos become rhythm.

01 · Alone

Ten thousand clocks, and none of them agree.

Every male carries his own rhythm. Left to himself he flashes when he pleases, a small bright argument in the dark. Watch the hillside now: it glitters, but it does not pulse.

02 · Listening

Then they begin to listen.

A firefly that sees a neighbor flash early speeds up. One that sees a neighbor flash late slows down. No conductor, no leader, only small corrections, thousands of times a night. The dial in the corner measures how far they have come.

03 · Together

Six flashes. Then darkness.

Five to eight flashes in a few seconds, then six to nine seconds of nothing at all. The whole valley breathing to one beat. The dark is not a pause in the show. It is the show.

04 · Waves

Rhythm rolls down the mountain.

Perfect unison never lasts. Tiny delays between neighbors bend the beat into waves that sweep across the slope, the way applause travels around a stadium. Sync is not a state the forest reaches. It is something the forest keeps doing.

05 · Fleeting

Two weeks, and then it is over.

An adult lives about three weeks and never eats. The display peaks for a fortnight in late May or June, set by soil temperature and the length of the days, and then the valley goes quiet for another year.

The science

How ten thousand strangers agree on a beat

Nobody is in charge. Synchrony is what happens when every firefly follows one small rule, and the math for it fits on a napkin.

Physicist Yoshiki Kuramoto wrote the rule down in 1975. Treat every firefly as a clock hand sweeping around a dial. Each hand has its own natural speed, and each is nudged a little toward the average of all the others. Below a critical coupling strength the hands scatter. Above it, they lock. The simulation behind this page runs exactly that rule for every light you can see.

Each firefly's own tempo. They differ by a few percent, which is why an uncoupled swarm drifts apart within a minute.

How strongly a firefly answers what it sees. Scrolling through the second chapter turns this dial from zero to full.

Zero when phases are scattered, one when every firefly agrees. It is the length of the arrow in the dial at the corner of the story.

How we found out

  1. Yoshiki Kuramoto publishes his model of coupled oscillators, the equation above.

  2. Renato Mirollo and Steven Strogatz prove that pulse-coupled oscillators, fireflies included, almost always end up in sync.

  3. Lynn Faust, who had watched the display from her family's cabin at Elkmont since childhood, reads a magazine article claiming synchronous fireflies live only in Asia. She writes to the researchers to say otherwise.

  4. Jonathan Copeland and Andrew Moiseff publish the first measurements of synchrony in Photinus carolinus, made in the Smokies.

  5. Crowds outgrow the road. The park begins shuttling visitors to Elkmont from Sugarlands Visitor Center.

  6. Demand outgrows the shuttles. Vehicle passes move to a lottery.

Plan a visit

A night at Elkmont

Elkmont is a former logging town and summer cabin colony inside the park, a few miles from Gatlinburg. During the display the road closes, and the only way in is a pass drawn by lottery.

  1. The lottery opens

    For a few days each spring, recreation.gov takes applications for a dated vehicle pass. A small application fee, a preferred night, and luck.

  2. Passes are drawn

    Winners get one evening and one parking spot at Sugarlands Visitor Center. Everyone else gets next year.

  3. Eight nights of viewing

    Park at Sugarlands, ride the trolley to Elkmont, and walk in along the Little River. Bring a chair, a red light, and patience.

  4. The valley starts to blink

    The first flashes come around 9:30 and the rhythm builds for an hour or more. Trolleys run back to Sugarlands until late.

Be a good guest

  • Cover your flashlight with red or blue cellophane. White light resets the fireflies and wrecks the dark for everyone around you.
  • Point it at the ground, and only while walking. Once you are settled, turn it off and let your eyes adjust.
  • Stay on the trail. The females wait in the leaf litter. A boot in the wrong place ends a lineage.
  • Never catch them. Photograph if you must, but a phone screen is a lantern. Dim it all the way down.
  • Keep it quiet. The display makes no sound. Be at least as quiet as it is.
  • Pack out everything you bring. The larvae live in that litter for two years.
